Plot summary
William Tell makes his living at casino tables, betting small so that neither fame nor casino bouncers take notice, and sleeping in motels where he strips the rooms of their decoration and covers the furniture in sheets. At a casino he runs into La Linda, who recruits gamblers for investors and offers to back him; he turns her down. A security-industry convention shares the building with an Atlantic City casino, and Tell slips into a seminar given by retired Major John Gordo before leaving. Outside, Cirk Baufort, whose father Roger served at Abu Ghraib alongside Tell, hands him a name and number. Cirk blames Gordo, an uncharged civilian consultant, for his family's ruin and wants help capturing and torturing him. Tell refuses, but takes Cirk along as he gambles, hoping to keep him from a violent life.
