Plot summary
Eight top-ranked players each receive an invitation to beta test a virtual reality game for a $100,000 prize. Carl, Shelly, Edward, Andre, Marco, Zahid, Adam and Taylor gather at the test site, put on motion capture suits and are scanned before being handed their VR gear. Zahid, a Bosnian Muslim who picked his username as a joke, objects to wearing equipment that casts him as a terrorist, and only agrees after Shelly tells him the others understand the name was ironic. Helmets on, the players watch the office around them become a war-torn setting, and a simulated sergeant sets their task: Russian terrorists have seized every floor, and the group must fight its way down from the twenty-fifth. The opening level is simple enough, and Andre, a former soldier, takes charge. In the fighting that follows, Carl is wounded.

- Writer-director Charles Barker said the film's concept came from "the idea of being trapped in a helmet you couldn't get off", and that he was influenced by first-person shooter games such as Call of Duty and Medal of Honor.
- Barker said he wanted to explore what would happen if gamers were put into a real-life combat situation, a premise the anime Sword Art Online had already explored.
