Plot summary
Brother Deacon, who doubts what he hears, travels with Gray, a layman who runs the technology, and the stringent Father Mark Amidon to a thirteenth-century church in the Devon countryside. The Vatican has sent the three to look into reports of supernatural activity at the building, recently reopened. Gray sets up recording equipment inside, and the local priest, Father Crellick, says a miracle has occurred, then plays them a recording in which objects on the altar move by themselves. Deacon stays unconvinced. Mark finds a hidden side panel, but something unseen disturbs him before he can enter it. A multi-mic radio setup picks up deep growls, whispers and the sound of an infant crying.

- Several scenes between Gordon Kennedy and Robin Hill were improvised, and the pair's comic rapport led to extra material being shot, including the pub scene, so the film's later change in tone would not be so abrupt.
- The characters used head-mounted cameras rather than handheld ones, which producer Jennifer Handorf said complicated the editing because there was no conventional master shot, so shots and camera movements had to be planned during filming.
- Brent Tor was considered as a filming location but its church was too small, so producer Jennifer Handorf scouted between 15 and 20 churches before West Ogwell Church in Devon was chosen.
