Plot summary

Julien is a farming machine salesman with a wife, Delphine, and a daughter, Suzanne. At the local pharmacy he meets Esther Despierre again; they knew each other in school. Esther is married to Nicolas, who is seriously ill with recurring seizures and lives in the hospital. Julien and Esther become lovers, meeting from time to time in the blue room of a hotel. When Esther asks whether he could see a life with her, Julien says yes. After Nicolas nearly catches them, Julien breaks off contact for months. Then letters from Esther begin arriving, each with a short note, and he finds them increasingly menacing.
