Plot summary

Mellie is twenty and lives at the family chateau with her father Alexandre, an aristocrat whose fortune is gone, and with her adolescent cousin Robinson. German troops have just invaded France, and yet the fighting still seems a distant matter at the estate. The one thing that has brought the war close is the drafting of André, the rich and unpopular man Mellie is engaged to marry. Robinson and his friends, all of them the same age, treat the conflict as a game and act it out on the blue island in the middle of the lake. Among them is Bertrand, fifteen and quick-tempered, who already considers himself grown up and is in love with Mellie.
