Plot summary
A church congregation holds a riverside baptism, and among the faithful immersed is Sister Martha Ann Jackson, three months married to Ras Jackson. Sister Ellerby and Sister Jenkins agree that because of her husband's wayward behavior Martha is not ready for religion. Ras misses the service and comes home from a hunting trip, admitting that the hog he killed belonged to a neighbor. He prays with his wife, then puts his rifle down; it drops and fires, and the bullet strikes Martha. As the congregation prays at her bedside, an angel comes for her spirit and leads her to a silent graveyard of those whose lives were ended by others' sins, then onward to the crossroads of life and death. Judas Green, an agent of Satan, comes to tempt her.
