Plot summary
When a meteorite lands near Arborville, California, a homeless man finds a gel-like creature inside and it clings to his hand. Three high school students, Paul Taylor, Meg Penny, and Brian Flagg, take him to the hospital. There the organism melts the man and then engulfs Paul while he calls for help; Meg witnesses Paul being consumed. Brian and Meg get little response from the police, so they meet at a diner to compare notes. The Blob attacks there too, pulling a worker into a drain and devouring the diner's owner and the sheriff. It slips back into the sewers, and the two teenagers set out to protect their town.

- Del Close had been set to direct a Lincoln Center "mock opera" about Ronald Reagan during The Blob's filming, but it was canceled and he became unexpectedly available to audition for The Blob; he had appeared in the 1972 sequel Beware! The Blob.
- The special effects team made the Blob creature from silk bags filled with methyl cellulose, a food thickener, which they called a "Blob Quilt"; the movie theater strobe-light scene used stop motion.
- For Reverend Meeker's burn scenes near the end of The Blob, Del Close needed five and a half hours of makeup for fresh burns and seven and a half hours for healed burns, for just a few minutes of screen time.
