Plot summary
Bramford Academy, in upstate New York, is a Catholic boarding school about to close for a week-long winter break. Rose, a senior, told her parents the wrong dates so she could stay behind, buying time while she tries to work out whether she is pregnant. Kat, a freshman, is left with her, and has a dream in which her parents die in a car crash. Rose goes out that night with her boyfriend to tell him; while she is gone, Kat receives a phone call from a voice. Rose comes back to find Kat prostrate in the boiler room. Joan, who has escaped a mental institution, is offered a ride by Bill and his wife Linda.

- Financing The Blackcoat's Daughter was so difficult that although Osgood Perkins completed the script in 2012, filming did not begin until 2015; Perkins blamed the horror genre's slumping success, and many who read the script thought it could never be made.
- Elvis Perkins, the singer-songwriter brother of director Osgood Perkins, had never written a film score before The Blackcoat's Daughter, and found the medium confining; he said the restrictions "almost killed him".
