Plot summary
Junie, sixteen, moves to a new high school after her mother dies, joining the class of her cousin Mathias, who brings her into his group of friends. The boys there take an interest in her, and she starts dating the quietest of them, Otto Cleves. In Italian class, a recording of Maria Callas singing Lucia makes Junie rush out in tears, leaving her things behind. Her teacher, Nemours, sees a photograph another student took of her and keeps it. Nemours has been involved with Florence Perrin, a teacher, and with Marie, a student, and he begins to pursue Junie, who has mixed feelings about him.
