Plot summary
Richard Vineyard, his wife Cynthia, their daughter Sadie and young son Danny leave their suburban home to camp in the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey. On the road they pass a mutilated deer. The commercial campsite they reach is crowded with other campers. Richard carries a wound from before the trip and takes pain medication for it, and the woods stir a childhood memory he has of this place. A camper recounts the legend of the Jersey Devil, said to be the thirteenth child of Mother Leeds, and other campers play a prank that upsets Richard. He leads his family away from the trails to a campsite deeper in the woods.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The shoot was planned to last 20 days, but two days were lost to severe rainfall. Because actors and crew had commitments straight afterwards, the film had to be shot in 18 days instead, with all of the daylight campsite scenes completed on a single day.
- Darren Lynn Bousman intended to shoot in the actual Pine Barrens of New Jersey, but budgetary reasons moved filming to the Toronto, Ontario area, with cast and crew mainly staying in Caledon. Three different forests stood in for the woods.
