Plot summary
Jack, who kills for money, is summoned by the aging gangster Robert Dragna and given a job that sounds simple: fetch a bag, bring it to a motel, and wait there until Dragna turns up. Dragna insists that the bag stay closed and that no one else sees what is inside. When Jack collects the bag, one of Dragna's men shoots him in the hand, and a phone call to Dragna brings no sympathy, only instructions to continue as arranged. At the motel, Jack encounters Ned, the wheelchair-using desk clerk, Rivka, a prostitute, and Lizard and Guano, two bald men who seem angry about something. Jack asks for room thirteen, which Ned describes as dangerous because nothing else is attached to it. Rivka gets into his room and begs him to let her remain.
