Plot summary
Cayetana de los Heros is eight and lives in Peru in the early 1980s, when political violence is growing. Her parents are divorced and she rarely sees her father. She stays with her mother, who has remarried, and her stepfather at their home outside Lima, where servants look after her. Her cousin Jimena, who is chronically ill, keeps her company. When her mother returns from a trip with news that she is pregnant, Cayetana shuts herself in her room and announces that she intends to die on the day her brother is born.
