Plot summary
In 1921 London, Florence Cathcart works with the police, exposing men and women who pretend to speak for the dead. Her fiancé died in the First World War, and she hunts ghosts to test whether the dead can return. Robert Mallory, who teaches at a boys' boarding school in Rookford, asks her to look into sightings of a child ghost and the death of a pupil, Walter Portman. She refuses at first, then agrees when Robert says the boys are like orphans, since she is one herself. At the school she meets the housekeeper, Maud Hill, who has read her books, and Tom, whose parents are in India. The school closes for half-term, and Florence stays on with Robert, Maud and Tom.
