Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Adventures of André and Wally B. (1984)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The short featured the first use of motion blur in CGI animation, and its complex 3D backgrounds were made with particle systems, with lighting and colors inspired by painter Maxfield Parrish.
  • Much of the film was made "in the wee hours" because the Cray supercomputers in Minnesota and the VAX machines at MIT and Lucasfilm were often available to the team only at night. Cray Research let them use its computer hoping Lucasfilm would buy one.
  • At its SIGGRAPH debut, 2 shots of the short, about 6 seconds, were incomplete, shown as wire-frame "pencil test" footage over completed backgrounds, because there was no time to finish rendering.
  • Because CGI models were then restricted to rigid geometric shapes, Alvy Ray Smith wrote André as a robot, but John Lasseter realized a more cartoony, soft-looking character was possible, since Ub Iwerks' Mickey Mouse was made almost entirely of geometric forms.
  • The animation was John Lasseter's first computer-animated project with Lucasfilm, and the success of this project and others that followed helped lead to his becoming an executive at Pixar.
