Plot summary
A clay facsimile of London's Christmas Square is the setting for a Christmas choral celebration hosted by Rex, an erudite Tyrannosaurus rex, and Herb, a hungry Styracosaurus. The two present stand-alone performances of carols and holiday standards and explain the traditions behind each song. The Biblical Magi sing "We Three Kings" while their camels take the chorus in doo-wop style. The Paris Bell-Harmonic, church bells who hammer their own heads to sound each note, performs "Carol of the Bells" at Notre Dame, with a dawdling low C bell provoking its maestro. The California Raisins perform "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" after missing the last bus out of town. All the while Rex tries to settle the pronunciation and meaning of wassail, and dogs, geese and pigs answer him with their own versions of the carol.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The special is co-hosted by two dinosaurs, the erudite Tyrannosaurus Rex and the dim, bespectacled Styracosaurus Herb, who had appeared in Will Vinton videos since 1980 and here vaguely parody the critics Siskel and Ebert.
- On the companion soundtrack album, Patric J. Miller was granted songwriting credit on all ten songs that were in the public domain at the time, without regard to their actual authors.
- The special won the 1988 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program, credited to Will Vinton as executive producer and director, David Altschul as producer and Ralph Liddle as writer.
- One segment is the only part of the special not rendered in Vinton's trademark Claymation, using instead a stylized, flat animation style that resembles paintings and stained glass windows.
