Plot summary
Thérèse Laroque and Bernard Desqueyroux marry in southwestern France in the late 1920s, a match that unites two wealthy families rather than one of affection. She goes to live on his family's property, a vast stretch of pine forests. Bernard, a landowner of the region, is devoted to hunting and to defending the family traditions. Thérèse finds the routine of married life monotonous. A daughter, Marie, is born to them, and her boredom only grows. Bernard is treated for an unspecified condition with arsenic. The strict provincial society around the couple leaves Thérèse with little room to live as she wishes.
