Plot summary
In 2035, global warming has left Earth barely habitable and humanity close to extinction. The Earth Federation launches a ship on a hundred-year journey to Trion, a distant planet that might support colonization. The crew of eight represents Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, and Saudi Arabia. They sleep in cryogenic suspension for the trip. As the ship nears Trion, the crew awakens. They discover the Captain's decomposed body in his capsule. Commander Hollis takes charge. He reads a secure transmission that arrived from Earth during their sleep, then kills himself, leaving a note saying he joins his loved ones. The new commander, Lieutenant Jammad, shares the message with the others: Earth has suffered a nuclear holocaust.
