Plot summary
Catalina Guzmán is fifteen and growing up in a middle-class family in Puebla in the 1930s. General Andrés Ascencio notices her during a family excursion and begins visiting her, bringing gifts and compliments. Smitten, she agrees to travel with him to Tecolutla. Some days after she returns home, he comes to her house and asks her to marry him. She accepts, although her family has mild doubts because of her age. When the marriage papers are signed, he tells her father that he now controls her behavior.
