Plot summary
A group of young men kidnaps nineteen-year-old Sezim and carries her to the hinterland, where she is forced to marry a stranger. She had wanted to study in the Kyrgyz capital. The practice is ala kachuu, bride kidnapping, a tradition and a form of forced marriage that draws heavy criticism and remains widespread in Kyrgyz society; the Kyrgyz name translates as grab and run. Refusing the marriage would bring Sezim social stigmatization and exclusion. Her wish for freedom runs against the constraints of the culture around her, and she searches for a way out of a marriage she has never agreed to.
