Plot summary
Pilar, a middle-aged Catholic devoted to social causes, looks after Aurora, her neighbor in an old Lisbon building, an octogenarian who lives on her pension and is eccentric, superstitious and drawn to the casino. Aurora shares her apartment with Santa, a quiet maid from Cape Verde skilled in vodun divination. Pilar also has an admirer, a romantic painter who keeps pressing his art on her. Feeling her time is short, Aurora asks Pilar to find Gian-Luca Ventura, a man her friends have never heard of. Pilar finds him, a man who had lived in Mozambique, and his account brings out the story of Aurora's years on a tea farm at the foot of Mount Tabu.
