Virginia Gilmore
Biography
Virginia Gilmore was an American actress of film, stage, and television who started out on the stage in San Francisco at 15 and moved to Los Angeles in 1939 to work in movies. After approaching Samuel Goldwyn at his home, she was promised a screen test and soon won small film roles. Her best known screen appearances came in 1941 with Western Union (1941), directed by Fritz Lang, and Swamp Water (1941), directed by Jean Renoir. As film offers dwindled she moved to New York City and worked on Broadway, playing in Those Endearing Young Charms and The World's Full of Girls in 1943 and the title role in Dear Ruth in 1944, directed by Moss Hart. Later Broadway credits included Truckline Cafe and Critics Choice. From the late 1940s she took many television roles, and she taught drama at Yale University from 1966 to 1968. She died in 1986.
