Plot summary
A book thief who owes money to criminals is looking for somewhere to hide. Chance puts Nick Gutlicht in the estate of Curt Ledig, a famous philosopher, now very old, who forgets things and has a fear of kitchens and who refuses to move in with his daughter. The daughter and her family hire Nick to watch over Curt, which gives Nick the hideout he needs and leaves Curt free to prepare a presentation for a symposium that nobody believes he can still give. Curt takes Nick for a promising research subject and subjects him to odd therapy sessions, while Nick considers the philosopher's valuable library as a way to settle his debts.
