Plot summary
Jyothi and her son Rasukutty have waited seven years for Manickam, who abandoned them. He comes back from Mumbai as Shilpa, a transgender woman; Rasukutty accepts her at once, while Jyothi struggles. Elsewhere in Chennai, five boys cut class to watch an adult film at Thuyavan's home and learn that the actress is Soori's mother, Leela. Soori smashes the television and runs off, and Thuyavan needs money for a new set before his father finds out. Leela's husband Arputham, a street preacher who relies on faith healing, wants their injured son treated by prayer, not doctors. Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Super Deluxe (2019)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Ramya Krishnan was announced as a second female lead after Samantha Ruth Prabhu and even shot her portions, but walked out over creative issues. Nadhiya replaced her, then left unsatisfied with the script, and director Thiagarajan Kumararaja re-approached Krishnan, who immediately agreed.
- Mysskin's pivotal role in Super Deluxe was first offered to Anurag Kashyap, who refused the project and later expressed regret at not being part of the film after watching a screening.
- The first shooting schedule began in October 2016 but was halted after just 15 days because of demonetisation introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and because the actors had commitments in other projects.
- Director Thiagarajan Kumararaja and actor Mysskin said several sequences needed 100 to 150 takes, and one scene featuring Ramya Krishnan took 37 takes spread across two days.
- The team intended to shoot Super Deluxe on film, but a lack of negative film forced them to use a digital camera instead.
- Kumararaja planned a soundtrack album mixing retro style, jazz and contemporary classical music but decided against it, making it Raja's third film without a soundtrack after Adhu and Aaranya Kaandam. The team instead licensed yesteryear compositions of Ilaiyaraaja for the film.
