Plot summary
Lucio Sanchez lives in Ica, Peru, and earns his living giving piano lessons. He drinks, and his solitude has become more than he can bear, so he sets about rebuilding a life around the people he teaches. Beatriz, one of those students, was recently widowed and feels neglected, and she is drawn to Lucio. Raquel, another of his students, refuses to take orders from other people. Her father, Don Erasmo, is bankrupt and an admirer of Nazism, and he presses her into a marriage of convenience with Martín, a prosperous Jewish landowner, to lift the family out of ruin.
