Plot summary
Bruno Stroszek plays an accordion for a living as a street musician in West Berlin. Just out of prison and told to stop drinking, he goes to a bar he knows and meets Eva, a prostitute who has fallen on hard times, and he lets her stay in the apartment his landlord has kept for him. Eva's former pimps beat them both and destroy Bruno's accordion. Fearing more of the same, Bruno and Eva join Scheitz, Bruno's eccentric elderly neighbor, who intends to settle in Wisconsin, where his nephew Clayton lives. They tour New York City, buy a used car, and reach a winter prairie near Railroad Flats, Wisconsin, where Bruno works as a car mechanic and Eva waits tables at a truck stop diner.

- Werner Herzog had planned to cast Bruno Schleinstein in the title role of Woyzeck but chose Klaus Kinski instead, and wrote Stroszek's leading part specifically to compensate Schleinstein.
- While shooting around Plainfield, Wisconsin, Werner Herzog planned to meet documentary filmmaker Errol Morris to dig up the grave of serial killer Ed Gein's mother, but Morris never showed.
- Herzog wrote the Stroszek script in four days, and it uses a number of biographical details drawn from the life of its star, Bruno Schleinstein.
- The English singer Ian Curtis, of the band Joy Division, reportedly watched Stroszek in the hours before his suicide.
