Plot summary

The Yokoyama family gathers at the home of Kyohei, a retired doctor, and his wife Toshiko for the yearly memorial of their eldest son Junpei, who drowned saving a boy. Their surviving son Ryota comes with his wife Yukari, a widow, and her young son Atsushi; their daughter Chinami arrives with her husband and children. Ryota knows his parents favored Junpei, whose belongings Toshiko keeps untouched, and Kyohei has never accepted that Ryota works in art restoration rather than medicine. Kyohei and Toshiko are distant with Yukari, believing a widow brings bad luck. Chinami proposes moving her family in to care for her parents, and Ryota tells Yukari privately that he cannot find steady work.

  • Director Hirokazu Kore-eda said in an interview on the Blu-ray release of Still Walking that much, though not all, of the film was motivated by memories of his own childhood and the eventual death of his mother.
  • A "making of" supplement on the same Blu-ray shows that many of Still Walking's scenes were not fixed in the script: some took shape during rehearsals, and others were invented outright while shooting on location in what appeared to be the Yokohama area south of Tokyo.
