Plot summary
A fugitive who calls himself Smith reaches a homestead standing on a treeless desert plain, where two siblings, Felix and Betty Crabtree, live by themselves. He is heading north with three sinister figures in pursuit. Felix uses a wheelchair, and he tells Smith that a wall of cliffs blocks the northern route. The only way past, he argues, is to fly, and he has a plan for a flying machine that Smith could help him build. Smith is skeptical at first. Betty, who is religious, is sure Smith is a demon from hell, and she plans to get rid of him.
