Plot summary
Kirie Goshima is a high school student in Kurouzu-cho, a small town in Japan. She comes upon her boyfriend Shuichi Saito's father filming the corkscrew pattern on a snail's shell, unaware of her presence. The man is assembling a video scrapbook of anything with a spiral or vortex shape. The interest grows into an obsession: he abandons his duties at work, declares the spiral the highest form of art, and stirs whirlpools into his miso soup when he cannot find spiral-patterned kamaboko. Kirie thinks little of the encounter at first. Before long, the whole town shares a fixation with spirals, and people in Kurouzu-cho are tormented by the shapes.
