Plot summary
Fran finds social contact difficult and keeps mostly to herself at work. Her thoughts often drift to her own death, and picturing it gives her a feeling that her quiet days otherwise do not. Robert arrives as a new colleague in the office. When he laughs at something Fran says, the two of them start to talk, and their exchanges lead to a conversation, a slice of pie and a date. The story plays out in a coastal city in Oregon. The obstacle in the way of anything growing between them is Fran and the isolation she keeps around her.
