Plot summary
Thaddeus McGillicuddy leads a popular New York band under the name Terry Rooney and dances as its hoofer on a radio show. An offer to make movies takes him to Hollywood, leaving Rita Wyatt, the band's singer and his fiancée, behind. There, studio boss B.O. Regan puts a team of studio professionals to work molding Rooney into a star. Having dealt with one new talent whose ego grew beyond control, Regan secretly orders that nobody on staff praise Rooney's work, on pain of dismissal.

- Because of the expense of making Something to Sing About and its poor box office, Grand National went bankrupt in 1940. The next film the studio had planned for James Cagney, Angels With Dirty Faces, was bought by Warners and filmed with Cagney in the lead.
- Evelyn Daw was not Grand National's first choice for Cagney's love interest in Something to Sing About; the studio initially announced that Helen Jepson would play the part.
- Cagney's tramp-steamer dance paired him with his long-time vaudeville friends Johnny Boyle and Harland Dixon, two major inspirations for his style, and he called it a "privilege". Boyle taught him the George M. Cohan dancing style he later used in Yankee Doodle Dandy, and Dixon staged the dances for Something to Sing About.
- According to an article in The New York Times, James Cagney would occasionally go over his dance steps with Fred Astaire before the dances in Something to Sing About were filmed.
