James Newill
Biography
James Newill was an American actor and singer who started out as a vocalist with West Coast bands in the early 1930s. After studying music at the University of California, he sang with those bands and recorded with Eddy Duchin's orchestra in 1936. He also sang for George Burns and Gracie Allen on their CBS radio program. His screen work began in 1937 with an uncredited singing part in The Affair of Susan. Between 1937 and 1940 he appeared as Sergeant Renfrew of the Royal Mounted in five films, and he later became known for westerns, playing Texas Ranger Jim Steele in the first 14 of a 22-film Texas Rangers series alongside Dave O'Brien and Guy Wilkerson. His final film was Gunsmoke Mesa (1944). He also appeared on Broadway in Sadie Thompson (1944) and Annie Get Your Gun from 1947 to 1948.
