Plot summary
Mike Kendall worked as a cop until a deadly incident on the job cost him his partner, and he left the force. Now he picks up private investigator work under the name Jack Winter, and drink has taken most of the rest from him. Kelly Banks, the adopted sister who keeps him afloat, and her husband Teddy are the family he leans on. Driving one day, he comes across a young prostitute left for dead beside the road and gets her to a hospital. When he answers her phone, the man on the line is hostile. Her grandfather, Steve Yendel, hires him to find the killer, and Mike takes the case on even as his former colleagues on the force warn him away.
