Plot summary
Austin, Texas, is home to a crowd of young bohemians, eccentrics and misfits, and this day moves among them one after another. Each conversation lasts only a few minutes before the camera leaves that person and catches up with somebody else nearby. A chatty taxi passenger holds forth about dreams. A man insists the United States got to the moon in the 1950s. An old anarchist shares his ideas with someone who came to rob him. A woman tries to sell a slide she says is Madonna's pap smear. Around town, a young man may or may not have struck his mother with the family car, renters find postcards left behind by a roommate who moved out, and a woman comes back from a mental hospital in Dallas. They talk about class, politics, work, the media and art.

- Slacker is often taken as a starting point for the 1990s independent film movement, along with the earlier Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Kevin Smith has said the film was the inspiration for his own debut, Clerks.
- Slacker's funding came mostly from Richard Linklater's family and friends. He raised money using a letter from Monte Hellman praising his first film, and bought cast and crew snacks and drinks on his Shell gasoline credit card, plus homemade peanut butter sandwiches.
- Slacker was shot without permits; Richard Linklater said police approached the production once but allowed it to continue after he explained they were making a movie.
- Richard Linklater did not want to appear in Slacker as its first character, but was convinced to take the part by Lee Daniel.
- The scene in which a young man runs over his own mother was inspired by a real incident that happened near the Austin house shared by Richard Linklater and Lee Daniel.
- The film's final scene was inspired by an afternoon that Lee Daniel spent atop the Twin Peaks in San Francisco.
