Plot summary
Chacha, a barber, runs a shop called Singapore Saloon in the village of Tenkasi, where Kathir and Basheer grow up as friends. Kathir resents Chacha for shaving his head as a boy, then grows fond of his technique and befriends him. In tenth grade he falls for Nilavathi, a customer's daughter; her father takes her away, and Chacha, after scolding him, decides to teach him the trade. Chacha leaves Tenkasi during Kathir's twelfth-grade year and leaves his box behind. Kathir's father sends him to college, where he meets Nilarathi, who warms to him after he helps style her hair for a play. Kathir turns down a company job to pursue hairstyling. Nilarathi refuses a marriage proposal from him over his choice of profession, and Kathir takes work at Wink Saloon, owned by the hairstylist Anoop Menon.
