Plot summary
In a psychiatric hospital on Christmas Eve, Dr. Henry Bloom sets up a tape recorder and asks Ricky Caldwell to explain how he came to be held there for murder. Ricky's account begins with the Christmas Eve when a man in a Santa suit shot his father and stabbed his mother while his older brother Billy watched. It moves on to the orphanage run by the abusive Mother Superior, whose punishments marked both boys, and to the Christmas Eve when Billy snapped and went on a killing spree. After Billy's death, Ricky was taken in by the Rosenbergs, a Jewish couple who did not celebrate Christmas. He traces his terror of the color red back to those nights, and describes the killings he committed against people he judged naughty, while Dr. Bloom searches for what set him off.
