Plot summary
A New York City prison holds men who are mostly African American or Puerto Rican. Clark Davis comes in on remand. He is young and white, from the middle class, accused of raping a girl. Once the other prisoners learn the charge, they turn on him, because they see a child molester as the lowest kind of prisoner. Juan, an older man in the same prison, treats him with some dignity. The prisoners use the term short eyes for a man convicted of child sex abuse.
