Miguel Pinero was born on December 19, 1946 in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. He was an actor and writer, known for Short Eyes (1977), Breathless (1983) and Fort Apache the Bronx (1981). He died on June 16, 1988 in New York City, New York, USA.

Piñero's first literary work, a poem called Black Woman with a Blonde Wig On, won a contest after the director of an ex-con acting troupe submitted it.
Big break
In 1974, Miguel Pinero's play was staged at Riverside Church in Manhattan. Joseph Papp, a theater impresario, attended, was impressed, and transferred the production to Broadway.
Behind the camera
During the 1970s, Piñero co-founded the Nuyorican Poets Café alongside a group of artists that included Pedro Pietri and Miguel Algarín. The Café serves as a venue for poetry about life as a Nuyorican or Puerto Rican in New York.
