Plot summary
Alex Malmquist is a college freshman who has made no friends, and when he speaks to his mother he invents a best friend and a girlfriend. His roommate Sam keeps his distance. One night Alex leaves his dorm and goes with Sam to a party at the Shithouse fraternity, where he meets Maggie Hill, his dorm's sophomore residential advisor. Alex and Maggie spend the night talking. He describes how hard it is for him to connect with other students and his unease at living far from his family. Maggie talks about her estrangement from her father, her grief over the death of a pet turtle, and her secret dream of acting. The two of them join a group of students for an impromptu baseball game.

- Shithouse started out as a fifty-minute YouTube video that Cooper Raiff shot over five days during spring break at Occidental College in March 2018, starring himself and his then-girlfriend. Raiff tweeted the video to filmmaker Jay Duplass, who suggested turning it into a feature.
- Raiff dropped out of Occidental College in early 2019 to make the film, and shot it over two weeks in Los Angeles in August 2019. Because the production could not afford clearance to film on Occidental's campus, it shot there without permits, with Raiff telling questioners he was making a "student short with no money."
- South by Southwest was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the festival's film competition still went ahead, and Shithouse won its Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature.
