Shirin Ebadi: Until We Are Free (2022) on Netflix

Plot summary

Shirin Ebadi works as a lawyer in Iran, taking up cases for women and children. Her best known case is that of Zara Kazemi, a Canadian photojournalist killed in Iran. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the first Muslim woman to receive it. The Islamic Republic spent years trying to intimidate her, and when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took power in 2005 the pressure grew: her phones were tapped, her law office bugged, spies followed her. Colleagues were harassed, her daughter detained, her sister arrested on charges she disputed. Lectures were shut down, mobs sent against her home, her offices seized, and a death threat nailed to her front door.
