Biography

Amy Goodman is an American broadcast journalist and author who has hosted and executive produced Democracy Now!, the independent news program she co-founded in 1996. She earlier spent a decade producing the evening news for WBAI, a community radio station in New York City that is part of the Pacifica network. Her reporting has focused on conflicts and movements that receive little attention from US corporate media, including East Timor's independence struggle, Chevron's role in Nigerian military action against villagers, the 1999 Seattle World Trade Organization demonstrations, and the 2004 coup in Haiti. With Jeremy Scahill, she made Drilling and Killing: Chevron and Nigeria's Oil Dictatorship, a documentary that won a George Polk Award. Goodman's honors include the Thomas Merton Award, the Right Livelihood Award, the Gandhi Peace Award, and the I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence. She has also written six books, among them The Silenced Majority and Democracy Now!: Twenty Years Covering the Movements Changing America.
