Plot summary
Riley Brennan and three companions in a paranormal research team, the Paranormal Paranoids, vanish while filming inside an abandoned prison in Shelby Oaks. Searchers find the bodies of the other three and one of the team's two cameras, which holds footage of a frightened Riley. Twelve years afterward, Mia, Riley's older sister, takes part in a documentary about the unsolved case. She says she believes Riley is alive, and recalls Riley's night terrors as a child and Riley's belief that something was watching her. The discovery of the bodies strains Mia's marriage to Robert, as does the couple's failure to conceive a child.

- Before filming began, Chris Stuckmann created a fake paranormal-research YouTube channel, JesstheParanoid, as a guerilla marketing campaign for Shelby Oaks. Its found-footage videos drew over 100,000 views on some segments and convinced other YouTubers they were real, and clips later appeared in the film.
- Shelby Oaks became the most-funded horror film project on Kickstarter in March 2022, raising $650,000 by March 21 and ending its campaign with $1,390,845 from 14,720 backers.

The theatrical cut of Shelby Oaks changes the fate of Riley from the version shown at Fantasia, where she died falling from her bedroom window and the film ended with hellhounds surrounding the house. Reshoots instead have Riley survive the fall and be mauled to death by hellhounds while Mia is approached by the demon Tarion.- Reshoots in March 2025 added more violence and gore and refined the film, work that doubled Shelby Oaks's budget.
- The hellhound sequence in Shelby Oaks used three real trained dogs, which the production imported from Sweden and Siberia for the shoot.
- Stuckmann's screenplay was partly inspired by his relationship with his sister, who was shunned from the Jehovah's Witnesses church in which they were raised.
