Plot summary
Manual laborer Ma Yung Chen works in Shanghai beside his friend Hsiao Chiang Bei, a cart driver. A first encounter with Tan Sze, one of the crime lords who shares power in the city, starts Ma on the ladder of underworld influence. He wins respect step by step, through his strength of character and through his fists. Defeating a Russian strongman at a bout brings him a real break, and he takes up a fancy cigarette holder of the kind Tan Sze uses. He remembers his own humble beginnings, shares his good fortune with the laborers he once worked beside, and tells his men that extorting money from people who have none is pointless. The tea house he and his men frequent employs a singer, Chin Lin Chi, and her uncle, who provides the music.
