Plot summary
Built from archival race footage, broadcast news, and home video supplied by the Senna family, the documentary traces Ayrton Senna's career from his first Formula One season in 1984. He arrives from go-kart racing, which he recalls in voiceover as real racing. Early successes with Toleman and Lotus take him to McLaren, where he and his teammate Alain Prost compete for the same world championships. Senna also contends with the sport's top regulator, Jean-Marie Balestre. The film has no narrator and no talking-head interviews; race broadcasts, press conferences, and Senna's own voice carry the story. Off the track he supports driver safety in motorsport and charitable work for underprivileged children in Brazil.

- Because Ayrton Senna had about 40 cameras on him wherever he went by the 1990s, director Asif Kapadia was able to cut the archive footage like a drama, picking a mid shot, a reverse angle or even a high-angled helicopter shot at will.
