Plot summary
Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson set out to free climb the Dawn Wall, the southeast face of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. The face had been ascended before, by Warren Harding's aid climbing techniques in 1970, but never free. The two men live on the vertical rock for weeks while the world watches. For Caldwell, the attempt follows years of setbacks: at twenty-two rebels in Kyrgyzstan held him hostage, and he later lost an index finger in an accident. His marriage ended, and he turned to the Dawn Wall, spending six years working out and practicing the route with Jorgeson.
