Plot summary
On one side stands Alex, who runs the counter-terrorism unit of the D.G.S.E., France's external intelligence service. On the other stands Al Barad, who poses as a businessman while running a terrorist network and turning religious teaching to political ends. Both need new people, and for both, people are the weapon. Diane, who studied Arabic, is recruited into Alex's service almost before she understands what is happening to her, then trained to evade pursuers and resist interrogation. Pierre, a petty drug dealer, is arrested and sent to prison, where a fellow inmate named Aziz draws him into a version of Islam he presents as a family.
