Plot summary

Crewed by Captain Freya, her husband Gerard, engineer Omid, Johnny, Ciara and Sudi, the trawler Niamh Cinn Óir carries Siobhán, a PhD student of deep sea faunal behavior. The Irish Coast Guard tells them their planned fishing grounds sit inside an exclusion zone, but Gerard, who needs a large haul to keep the boat, goes there anyway. Something shoal-like stops the vessel, and Omid finds breaches in the hull leaking blue-green slime that Gerard takes for barnacles. Gerard sends Siobhán down with a knife and her diving gear to cut the boat free. Below, she sees tentacles of an enormous bioluminescent organism. The crew try to take it in the net and cannot. Releasing the net, Johnny catches his sleeve in the machinery, and the rope, contaminated with slime, slices his hand.
