Plot summary
In Strasbourg, Léo has no home. At twenty-two he earns money through sex work, and drugs are part of his days. What he longs for is genuine love. He is untamed, a wild animal rather than a man tamed by the rules of a modern city: he drinks water from the street, sleeps outdoors by choice, and eats discarded food without disgust. He says very little.

- Director Camille Vidal-Naquet was at first reluctant to cast Félix Maritaud as the sex worker Léo, wanting a younger, more "ill-looking" actor he thought would be too strong for the part, but meeting him changed his mind.
- Camille Vidal-Naquet and cinematographer Jacques Girault spent months before shooting planning the lighting so the explicit sex scenes would be filmed no differently from the others, the director saying "lighting is moral".
- Sauvage, Camille Vidal-Naquet's first feature film, grew out of his experience working with the Catholic charity Aux captifs la libération.
- Éric Bernard, who played Ahd, said he got no other prominent roles in French cinema after Sauvage and accused the industry of homophobic bias, echoing actress Muriel Robin's claim that it blocks gay and lesbian actors' careers.
