Plot summary
By 1595 the long war between Sweden and Russia is over, and a new border must be drawn between Swedish Finland and the Tsardom of Russia. Knut and Eerik, Finnish brothers, are among those sent to mark it. They travel with a unit of Russian soldiers. Eerik, a cartographer educated in Stockholm, has been hardened by years of fighting. The two go north through marsh and forest, and on the road they wrong a young woman, a deed that hangs over them. Deep in the swamp they come upon a village, and there a sauna, where the brothers hope to be cleansed of their sins.
