Plot summary
Long ago in Lapland, a boy named Nikolas loses his parents and his younger sister Aada in an accident. The heads of the village families meet and decide that no single household can raise him, so each will take him in for one year, beginning on Christmas Day. To show his gratitude, Nikolas whittles wooden toys and leaves them for the family that kept him, and the gifts spread until presents appear outside most doors on Christmas morning. When a blight leaves the households unable to take him in for another year, the grumpy hermit carpenter Iisakki takes the thirteen-year-old boy as his apprentice.
