Plot summary

Osnabrück, summer 1968. Fourteen-year-old Wolfgang Rosenkötter, who likes to tinker with mopeds, lives with his mother Ingrid and his stepfather Heinz. After Heinz catches him showing a pornographic magazine to his friends, the Youth Office sends Wolfgang to Freistatt, a Christian home for boys. Ingrid comforts him and promises to bring him home for Christmas; he takes a photograph of her with him. At Freistatt, housefather Brockmann greets him in the garden, then reads his file aloud, calling him aggressive and disobedient. The boys address the overseers as Brother and do hard labor in a peat bog, where Wolfgang's refusal to submit brings him into conflict with Brother Wilde and with Bernd, the boy who enforces the group's rules. He befriends Anton.
